A collection of map inspired assemblage artworks
I am a mixed media, assemblage artist. My work is inspired by found objects, old games, toys, maps (obviously) and storytelling. This is the first collection of artworks since my Dad passed away in December. My Dad was a collector of things. All things. Everything. We lovingly called him a “collector” but as a product of the Great Depression – the modern term for it is hoarding.
I grew up surrounded by boxes of stuff I was never allowed to touch. His treasures were so intriguing to me but there was a difference between a child's desire to play and my Dad's desire to collect and preserve. On the property that I grew up on there was an old shipyard house (coastal New Jersey) that was, early on, an antique shop called The Dusty Dowry. Over the years it became a house filled with boxes that no one but him went into. Another unopened box.
This collection is the beginning stages of opening that box and telling my Dad's untold stories thru art. My love of maps comes from his love of books. My love of games comes from his love of old toy railroads. A basement full of rusty things, an attic filled with doll parts and an inescapable desire to show the world what was in all those boxes.
When I sat down to name this show I thought about maps, and the fact that this was my first map inspired assemblage collection. That is was at The Junction. That it was the first show without my Dad. I drew the picture below and saw a cross (I’m not very religious) but having grown up strict Catholic I knew that it was a sign that my Dad is still very much here with me and my art.
